Which Water Filtration System Works Best for You?

We want to believe that the water from our sinks is clean. But for many, tap water contains chemicals and contaminants from pollution. These contaminants range from natural minerals specific to the area to industrial pollution. And in many cases, these contaminants do not have to be ingested. They can affect people through absorption or even inhalation. In most cases, contaminant levels are not high enough to make people within the home immediately sick. However, they can lead to chronic health problems.

Because of the possibility of contaminants, it may be a good idea to consider a filtration system for the home. But which filter is best? Below, we discuss which filtration system is right for those in different situations.

Faucet-Mounted System

faucetFaucet mounted filters can eliminate more contaminants than pitcher filters. They also do not have to be replaced as often and provide filtered water on-demand. Faucet water filtration systems are inexpensive and easy to install. They are also renter-friendly and environmentally- friendly. Unlike some other options, they do not create wastewater and do not require electricity.

Though there are some differences in effectiveness between brands, most faucet-mounted water filters prevent contaminants from entering the drinking water. Homeowners do need to be aware of when the filters should be changed. Usually, this is every few months, but it will depend on the brand of the filter. These also have many options for different aesthetics and looks for different kitchens.

Undersink System

Filtration systems installed under the sink are still effective at removing contaminants. Depending on the specific type, it can be challenging to install under-sink systems or change their filters. The good news is that most under-sink filters do not need to be changed more than twice a year. They are also eco-friendly in the same ways the faucet-mounted filters are. The bad news is that not all of these systems are renter-friendly. These are also more expensive than faucet-mounted filters, ranging from $200-$2,000. Depending on the specific situation, a faucet-mounted system may be a better choice.

Whole-Home System

A whole-home water filtration system is designed to provide clean water to an entire home. This means the sink offers clean drinking water, but the shower water and cooking water are clean as well. Filtered water is also better for clothes and dishes and reduces the chance of clogs in the plumbing system. It can reduce corrosion and improve pH levels which also extends the life of household fixtures.

However, these systems are not right for everyone. Depending on the location of the home, the water may not have as many harmful contaminants. Whole-home systems can also be costly, usually selling for around $2,000. These are typically not renter-friendly because of how invasive the installation process is, but some apartment complexes may have them installed for all of their units.
