Going Green: Useful Household Tips

For people that care passionately about the environment, April 22nd is important, because it’s “Earth Day.” That doesn’t mean people get time off as with a national holiday, but it does mean you should take some time to think about the planet we all share.

It’s a large, but delicate, world. If you want to make sure your children inherit an environment they can safely enjoy, there are things you can do right now in your own home to help that hope along. The experts here at Oliver’s Plumbing have created a list of tips that you can use to begin going green.

Get a Tankless Water Heater Installedsave-water

Older, traditional water heaters work crudely but adequately. They store large volumes of water in a tank and just burn up energy to keep that water warm before sending it to taps or showerheads around the residence.

When the water runs out, you need to wait for more of it to get heated before you can start using it again.

A tankless water heater applies heat to the water directly inside the plumbing. This is much more efficient, upwards of $100 less per year to pay in bills kind of efficient. It also means that once the water is heated, it doesn’t run out.

Change Over To Eco-Friendly Plumbing Fixtures

Your old fixtures work, but do they work as well as they should? Newer, eco-friendly plumbing fixtures are more efficient with water use, which is good for the environment and even better for your water bills.

High-efficiency showerheads still give you plenty of pressure if you want it, but don’t waste water. Low flow toilets don’t waste up to seven gallons of water per flush the way 20th-century models can. There are some big savings in these newer models.

Install a Water Filter

A water filter improves the green factor in your home a number of ways. If you prefer the cleanliness and taste of bottled water, a water filter gives you the exact same result, but you no longer have to pay for all that bottled water, and you don’t have to recycle those empty bottles.

It also means you get easier access to safer drinking and cooking water. If you have an older home with lead pipes, a water filter on the tap can screen out those metallic fragments, which can put your health at risk over the long term.

Find Ways to Shrink Your Carbon Footprint

carbon-footprintCarbon dioxide, also known as CO2 acts like an insulator in our atmosphere, making the earth retain more heat and helping along the global warming effect.

We all contribute a certain amount of CO2 to the atmosphere through our daily life, and that specific amount is our carbon footprint.

You can reduce your footprint by using eco-friendly products with lower rates of CO2 emission. You can also give your dollars to businesses with a policy of lowering CO2 emissions in their manufacturing processes.
